Monarch butterfly grove in Pismo Beach

The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of only five sites in the state that has counts of over 10,000 butterflies annually. Each year thousands of vibrant orange and black Monarch Butterflies flock to Pismo State Beach, a location essential to their successful migration, seeking shelter from the freezing northern winters. From late October to February, the butterflies cluster in the limbs of towering, majestic Eucalyptus trees flanking a riparian estuary that flows to the Pacific Ocean. The grove is easily accessible from CA State Highway 1 at the south boundary of the city limits of Pismo Beach.

Here are some tips for having your photos done at this great location or just for visiting,

  1. Wear lighter colors. The background is already a little on the dark side with all the tall trees.
  2. Make time to head to the beach trees after checking out the cool butterflies
  3. Take the tour before or after your session…..so interesting
  4. If your hotel or campsite is nearby just walk on over because parking can be a problem and is not always safe while crossing Highway 1
  5. Bring binoculars to see the butterflies. Sometimes there can be a wait for the stationary ones provided by the park
  6. This location is best for viewing butterflies in the morning and in the late afternoon for portraits
  7. Have fun!
